Affordable Education for All: A Conversation with Liberian Education Minister George Werner and Bridge International Academies Co-Founder Shannon May

Still reeling from a long civil war and the devastating Ebola outbreak, Liberia’s education system is in crisis. Less than 60% of school-aged children are in school, placing Liberia in the lowest percentile of net enrollment rates in the world. Those who do attend school may not fare much better: among adult women who reach fifth grade in Liberia, less than 20% can read a single sentence. Upon his appointment to Education Minister in 2015, George Werner knew he had a challenge and that he needed to act fast. In January 2016, he announced a public-private partnership already involving 26,000 students. If proven, the partnership could be rolled out to all Liberian schoolchildren.  One of the eight organizations partnering with the Liberian government is Silicon Valley inspired Bridge International Academies, designed to serve parents earning less than $2/day with over $100M in venture backing from Bill Gates, Mark Zuckerberg, the IFC, and Learn Capital. A History of Hip-Hop and Street Art with Fab 5 Freddy

Artist and activist Fred Brathwaite, more popularly known as Fab 5 Freddy, brought graffiti to the attention of the world alongside his close friend and artist Jean Michel Basquiat, helping it become a powerful movement with global implications, and was a central figure in legitimizing street art and hip hop culture at large. In addition to his art exhibitions in galleries and museums globally over the last three decades, Fab is immortalized in hip-hop history as the pioneering host of Yo! MTV Raps in the 90s. He helped connect the worlds of punk music and rap from obscure clubs and corners of New York City in the 1980s, ighlighting the rebellious spirit of both and catalyzing a new wave of sound that’s still relevant today. Most recently, Fab added a new layer to his international work- as a consultant and facilitator of visual arts and culture at the Africa Center, a museum and think tank currently being built along NYC's Museum Mile. Fab will be interviewed by Bahiyah Yasmeen Robinson, investment and brand consultant for media, arts and tech startups across the African Diaspora, and co-founder of Ebola Deeply and the Hip Hop Loves Foundation, who spent her early days writing for hip hop publications, managing artists like Nate Dogg and running around NYC's west village nightclubs with some of the most iconic hip hop artists of the 90s.
